"Training your dog is not a goal, it's a life long process, and a dynamic one at that" - unknown

Without the proper training, dogs can develop unwanted and sometimes dangerous behaviors. A lot of stress and anxiety that an untrained dog feels comes from not knowing what is expected of him. Obedience classes teach a dog that he will be rewarded for doing the right thing.

6 steps to successful dog training...

  1. Reward your dog for good behavior. The sooner he understands that good behavior results in praise or a treat the sooner he'll want to perform that behavior instead of a bad one. (This is called Positive Reinforcement training.)
  2. Connect his name with praise and rewards. You'll find him responding to you with enthusiasm.
  3. Be consistent. Don't allow your dog or puppy to indulge in a behavior one day and then scold him the next day for the same behavior. If you encourage him to jump on you to say hello when your wearing jeans then scold him when he jumps on you while your wearing your best cloths, you'll only confuse him. When it comes to learning good behavior it's all or nothing.
  4. Correct immediately. You have to reward your dog for good behavior and correct your dog for bad behavior as it is happening. Corrections should be short and swift. If they don't immediately follow the action, your dog or puppy never understand what he did wrong. Never physically hit or slap your dog or puppy. Physical punishment is ineffective, it can create more problems or make existing problems worse. If you catch your dog chewing on your socks,  reprimand him with a quick "ahah" while he is still chewing. Give him an acceptable chew toy and then be sure to praise him when he chews on the correct item.
  5. Keep your training sessions short. Your dog or puppy will look forward to them if they don't drag on forever. Look for ways to incorporate training into your daily routine, like giving a "sit" and "stay" command before patting him affectionately. He will soon associate training with something pleasant.
  6. Provide rules. A dog owner who allows their dog or puppy to have his way isn't doing him any favors. Without rules to follow, he will develop bad habits that will be harder to break later.
